Accra:
Ghana’s Capital is a busy modern city with some two million residents. You can find virtually anything in Accra, from markets and movie theaters to heritage colonial buildings.
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park:
In the south of the Capital city is Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum. The site is the resting place of Ghana’s first President and Africanist, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, while the attached museum holds many rare artifacts associated with the country’s struggle for independence. It is a truly stunning site, adorned from top to bottom in Italian marble.
Bojo Beach:
Bojo Beach can be found where the Densu River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Take a short boat ride from the fishing village, and you can experience restaurants, bars, and picturesque scenery unlike anywhere else in Africa.
Accra Mall:
A state-of-the-art retail and shopping center, the mall is fully enclosed and air-conditioned at all times. If you’re visiting nearby Tema Motorway, this is a great place to do some souvenir hunting.
Labadi Pleasure Beach:
This site has been called “the perfect beach” by both tourists and locals. Bask in the sun while enjoying food, cocktails, and more. Come nighttime, you’ll find native drumming, dancing, and local bands playing Ghanian hip hop and reggae.
Osu Castle:
Also known as “Fort Christiansborg,” this 17th-century castle is located right along the shoreline in Accra. Built by the Danes and subsequently rebuilt multiple times, it is a truly magnificent sight. It even served as the Ghanian seat of government for several decades.
James Town light house:
The lighthouse itself is secondary to the community that has sprung up around it. Something of a cultural hub, it is home to the Chale Wote Street Art Festival, the Accra Dot Alt, and almost daily events and activities.
Cape Coast Castle:
Situated on the Cape Coast to the West is this massive edifice originally built by the Swedes for the gold trade. Soon after, it became a slave fort, with storage rooms converted into dungeons and holding rooms. While an emotional place to visit, it remains an integral part of Ghanian history.
Manhyia Palace Museum:
The Asante Kingdom founded this museum to commemorate its leaders and share its unique culture with the world. While small in size, it is packed with artifacts. From royal regalia and furniture to drums, palanquins, and battle dresses, there are many objects of rich historical significance.
Artists Alliance Gallery:
The Artist Alliance Gallery is filled with breathtaking works of art, from paintings and ceramics to textiles, woodwork, and handicrafts. It is also located right on the Accra seafront, which makes for the perfect setting to enjoy the displays.
Kokrobite Beach:
Another beautiful beach located just 30 minutes away from Accra, this area is home to the Academy of African Music and Art, numerous resorts, and the world-famous Homowo Festival, which is held throughout the month of May.
Independence Square:
Black Star Square, or “Independence Square,” is situated in the heart of Accra. It is the site of many parades throughout the year and dates back to 1961 when it was constructed for a visit by Queen Elizabeth II.
Center for National Culture, Accra:
The National Center for Culture in Accra is located right next to Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and the Kwame Nkrumah Museum. It is a must-see for tourists, featuring everything from wood sculpture and beadworks to woven Kente cloth, leather bags, earrings, and other handmade accessories. If you’re in the market for African fashions, this is your ideal location.
Accra central Mosque:
About 20% of Ghana is Muslim, and the Accra Central Mosque is a true testament to their faith. The largest in all of West Africa, it was constructed to resemble the famous Blue Mosque of Istanbul. You can find it in the Kanda residential district, where it towers over the local homes.
Kakum National Park:
This area is the best way to see the stunning rainforests of southern Ghana. It is also ideal for spotting the country’s diverse wildlife, including buffalos, civets, elephants, meerkats, and hundreds of species of birds. When visiting, the canopy walkway is a site that can’t be missed.
National Museum of Ghana:
Founded back in 1957, the National Museum is the largest and oldest of the country’s six major museums and is situated in the Capital. It is home to an extensive collection of ethnographic and archeological artifacts as well as fine art. The collection ranges all the way from the Stone Age to the modern era, so there is plenty to see.
Accra International Conference Center:
This famous meeting venue is located in the Christiansborg district and is one of the most modern buildings in the area. It boasts a total of six halls with a total capacity of 6000 people. It is truly an impressive sight, both inside and out.
Okomfo Anokye Sword Site:
The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is situated in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region. Aside from being the second-largest health institution in the country, it is also home to the Okomfo Anokye Sword Site, which is considered sacred by the Ashanti people. The sword is buried in the ground and sealed off by a circular wall made of concrete. Considered Africa’s “Sword in the Stone,” this is a must-visit site for any tourist.
National Theatre of Ghana:
The National Theatre is often the site of conferences, seminars, award ceremonies, and other events. With world-class equipment and brilliant staff, this is where the vast majority of business travelers choose to hold their meetings.
